Allers Canine Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is the treatment of physical disability or injury with the use of warm water swimming which will improve the dog's quality of life.
Swimming is both a fun and beneficial form of exercise as it is low impact and allows free movement of the limbs with very little impact or pain. This gives dogs that are unable to exercise on land the chance to build up muscles in the affected area supporting the joints and in turn aiding the recovery process.
Swimming is also a great way to build cardiovascular fitness.
Who can benefit from hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy can help dogs with:
- Arthritis - Reduces the pain and swelling
- Hip and elbow displacia
- Cruciate ligament injuries
- Pre and post-operative conditions
- Cardiovascular fitness
- Muscle building and strengthening
- Weight loss - when fed with a diet food such as Allers Farm light
- Or just for fun!
The number and frequency of the sessions depends entirely on the reason for using hydrotherapy and this can be discussed with your vet.
The Pool here is large at 4m x 3m and this allows dogs both big and small, to swim comfortably. The water is kept at a temperature of between 28ºC - 30ºC and the quality of the water is checked regularly.
The dogs can enter the pool by a ramp or can be manually lifted in. A hydrotherapist may be in the water with the dog until it is confident and happy enough to swim on its own and can then be guided from the pool side.
All dogs will wear a buoyancy aid when in the water and will be roughly dried after they have swam, however we suggest you bring some towels for the car ride home.
The first session
As some dogs may be a little nervous, the hydrotherapist may work alone with the dog in the pool room to allow them to focus on 1 person while they gain confidence in the water and learn how to enter and exit the pool. Once the dog is relaxed then we are more than happy for you to join us in the pool room and watch and encourage your dog from the side of the pool.
